Tournament Info

Even though we didn't make it to the Championship round, the Hawks provided a number of great moments.

  1. The only PH 12/11 team to advance to the play-offs
  2. How many double plays did we make versus other teams?
  3. Max, Drew, and Jeffrey all had triples in the playoffs.
  4. Jeffrey and Drew led the team with 8 hits each, Josh was next with 7
  5. Chris and JR led the pitching staff with 5 strike outs each.   JR got his 5 in one game against El Cerrito.
Trevor
Trevor was an integral part of the team this season.  Trevor pitched 30 innings for the Hawks and was one of the leaders with his bat, leading the team with a .481 batting average.  Trevor averaged less than two batters an inning reaching base during his time on the mound over 30 innings of ball.  Great job, Trevor!  We hope you had a great  time.

Congratulations College Park Falcons Baseball

We went to the game saturday night at the Colosseum to watch the Falcons play against Arroyo High School.

What an exciting game to see!

The 2nd baseman, Jimmy Gardner, used to pitch on Lindsay's softball team when it was coach pitch.  He backed up his mom during those days.

I can imagine we'll be seeing a few more Hawks out there in the coming years.

Click on the image to see the slide show. Sorry, I didn't get all of the kids this time :(

The Pleasant Hill Hawk 11's finally won the Citrus Heights baseball tournament. For some kids, this was their 4th year playing in this tournament. 4 years, two 2nd places, one year not making it to the playoffs, the team finally won the tournament in convincing fashion against San Ramon 10-4.

Scores
  • Piedmont 4 Hawks 11
  • San Ramon 7 Hawks 8
  • Orinda 7 Hawks 14
  • Piedmont 0 Hawks 2
  • San Ramon 4 Hawks 10
HighLights

  • Max and Mathew each were hit for a total of 6 times. Ouch!
  • Down by 4 against San Ramon, bottom of the 7th inning. Not a problem. The kids decided that "everybody hits". They all lined up with their helmets on and proceeded to show San Ramon what not giving up means. Hawks scored 5 runs, winning the game on Willie's walk off double. The Hawks still had no outs....everybody did hit or got on base.

Highlights From the Weekend

  • Max leads the team in On Base %
  • Willie led the team in pitching.
  • Chris pitched 3 innings of shutout ball
  • Drew came back with a big bat, belting a triple
  • Zach belted a triple
  • Willie led the offense
  • Dylan was instrumental in 2 double plays
  • The team made 3 double plays, in including one kicked off by Dylan that had the umpires talking about it in the parking lot.  Th field ump made a comment that he doesn't see 14 year old teams make plays like that, particularly the way Dylan stopped the ball and kicked off the play.
The other sweet double play was while Chris was on the mound, a runner at 3rd and a runner at 1st.  The runner at 1st trotted to 2nd trying to get Chris to either balk or throw to 2nd.  Instead, Chris ran at the runner at 2nd, pumping the ball...ala Brian Huitt.  The poor kid just stood there not knowing what to do.  Chris tagged the runner at 2nd out, the runner at 3rd bolted for the plate, and Chris threw a bullet to Willie, well in time to block the plate and get the runner out.

That could very well be the only double play made without a pitch being thrown.

Manteca Tournament

Click on the image to see the slide show

Manteca Tournament

The Hawk 11's had a tough time at the Manteca Tournament.  The Hawks faced the Stockton Crushers as well as the Hard 90's.  The Crushers were tough to overcome, giving to us what the 07 Condors gave to them.  Tough hitting, great pitching, and stellar defense.  Max, Will, and Chris did their best against the Crushers, but we couldn't get the runners on base.

The Hard 90's game was a fun game to watch.  Ethan was great on the mound, with Brian supporting Ethan behind the plate.  The highlight was having a runner at 3rd, a dropped 3rd strike, and Brian chasing the batter to 1st, while holding the ball, drawing the 3rd base runner off.....then throwing him out at 3rd.  Incredible play!

Sunday

Sunday was a tough day.  Chris pitched 5 innings, battling against a hard hitting team.  The Hawk's turned a nice inning ending bases loaded double play with the #4 batter at the plate.  The Crushers #4 batter popped a fly ball to centerto JR.  JR got the double play by throwing the runner out at 2nd who didn't tag up.

Some Stats

  • The Crushers game on sunday was the 1st game of the season where the Hawks gave up no walks.
  • Willie leads the team in on base% with 650 for the last 5 games.
  • Trevor leads the season on base with 650, with Willie close behind at 620
  • Hawks have a 7-7-1 record for the season
  • Team batting average is .420, on base is .530

Old Time Hawks

Apparently, the Pleasant Hill Hawks Baseball Team has a bit of a legacy here in Contra Costa County.

Twice, Chris and I have been approached by Pleasant Hill Hawks Alumni. One time, we were at a sports store getting equipment for Chris when the sales guy noticed Chris's sweatshirt and mentioned he played on the Hawks in the 70's!

Tonight, after the clinic and while Chris was still in his uniform, a guy came up to Chris at Safeway and asked Chris if he was on the Hawks. When Chris said yes, he was asked if it was the Pleasant Hill Hawks. Chris said yes again. The guy said he wanted to shake Chris's hand......he was on the Hawks over 20 years ago!

I told the guy that Chris's team just won their first tournament and he was really excited to hear about the team and how they were doing.

....and....one other note.....

Chris's uncle was also on the Hawks 20+ years ago.

Sydney Downing

From the Contra Costa Times:
Sydney Morgan Downing
Sydney Morgan Downing Mar. 3, 2001 Jan. 15, 2008 Resident of Walnut Creek "Princess Sydney" of Walnut Creek is survived by her beloved family, Mother Christine, Father Dwayne, and Brother Drew. Sydney was the adored princess of her grandmother Eloise Butticci and late Grandfather Dennis Butticci. Sydney touched so many lives. She loved art, dancing and fashion and she wore it well! Think of her as resting from the sorrows and the tears in a place of warmth and comfort where there are no years. Think of her as living in the hearts of those she touched for nothing loved is ever lost and she was loved so much. We will be celebrating Sydney's everlasting life at a Mass at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 1650 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek on Friday January 18, 2008 at 11am. Memorial donations can be made to Comfort for Kids, 3470 Buskirk Avenue, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523. Oak Park Hills Chapel (925) 934-6500
Published in the Contra Costa Times from 1/16/2008 - 1/17/2008.

Sydney's brother, Drew, was a Condor teammate. Sydney was a member of the Condor Baseball Family which many of the Hawks kids were on. Sydney's family was an integral part of the Condor experience. Even though they are no longer with the team the Downing family are certainly in our thoughts and prayers.

1st Practice Of The Season

I'll be posting pictures throughout the season and maybe a video or two. For now I've posted pictures on Flickr which can be found here.

I'm trying to figure out a way to do a slide show inside of this blog instead of having to go to Flickr to see the pictures. So, hopefully things will improve.

You can post comments on this site and if others want to be able to post here, let me know and I can get you setup to add to this site. It's very easy to do, you don't have to be too savy with the internet.

Clip Of Things To Come

We're looking forward to another great season of baseball!

Oh....and I'll fix the colors....they hurt my eyes too!
